Boiler Babes cast the net

Te Tupu O Te Manava oe vaka club’s under 19 ‘Boiler Babes’ team is currently recruiting new members for the ace squad.

The team is looking for new paddlers over the age of 16 to train and be part of the club and crew.

In 2009, the Boiler Babes under 19 crew of Michaela Dearlove, Samantha Puati, Emilene Taulu, Raukura Ellison, Anna Vinsen and Jana Robertson successfully defended their Vaka Eiva under 19 championship title for the second year running.

And the plan is to defend and win the coveted junior title during the November Mapu Oe Vaka – the junior programme of the Vaka Eiva Festival.

Boiler Babes coach Dean Tutaka-George is inviting any interested paddler over 16 to give oe vaka a go.

But George says that while the Boiler Babes is the Te Tupu club’s under 19 crew, there’s always room for new paddlers over 19 to join the club and the team for oe vaka paddling.

The crew will meet every day this week at the Avarua harbour at 4.30pm for training where intending paddlers can come along and find out what oe vaka is all about.

George says that this week will be a bit of a ‘meet and great’ session before actual oe vaka training sessions begin next week.

To find out how you can be part of this dynamic team or take up the team’s training option for older paddlers – contact Dean Tutaka-George on 55700.
