The second instalment of the expanded Edgewater Women’s Cricket League got off to a ripper of a start last weekend.

Muri, despite having a strong line up, have struggled in the Saturday morning competition to date, but that all changed for Punanga Kaveao’s team last Saturday as captain Kaveao lead by example and posted an impressive 31 not out to take her team to 163 for 4, ably assisted by Larcyn Rani (24).

Turangi put in a ha effort to the 20th over however fell three runs short.

The young up and coming stars of the Matavera side showed exceptional cricket skills when they took on Avatiu-Nikao.

Bowling first, Matavera’s Vicky Thompson put on a superb bowling performance (3 wickets for 14 runs) to see Avatiu all out for 52 runs.

Ace Matavera opening batter Bene Matapo continued her outstanding form to bat the entire innings, scoring 37 not out and collecting the win for Matavera.

This evening sees a string of battles as eastern midweek teams take on western midweek teams for the first time.

The match up of the evening surely will be the unbeaten sides of Turangi and Arorangi as they do battle at Raemaru Park.
