Mitiaro airstrip closed for maintenance

Wednesday 22 May 2019 | Written by Losirene Lacanivalu | Published in Outer Islands

The Mitiaro island airstrip is closed short term for maintenance work which starts today.

Air Rarotonga’s chief executive officer Ewan Smith says normal maintenance work will be carried out on the runway.

Smith said Air Raro did operate a flight to Mitiaro yesterday, however, with the maintenance work now underway, the next flight scheduled to Mitiaro is expected to be on May 29.

He said the airstrip will be closed for the next six days for the maintenance work which will allow Air Rarotonga to maintain its flights to the island.

In an earlier article, it was reported that outer island airstrips need to have regular maintenance work carried out to maintain airline services.

The Mitiaro airstrip was first built in 1977 and was later realigned to allow for an improved compacted coral surface and length in the early 1980's.
