Netball Cook Islands have announced their coaching team for the U21 National Squad as they prepare for the journey to the 2021 World Youth Cup in Fiji.

Netball Cook Islands High Performance vice-president, Andrea Rongokea said Joy Bates had been appointed head coach and Sebon Will assistant coach.

“Based in Wellington, Joy is an Arorangi girl at heart and we can expect to see a lot more of her around in the upcoming months,” Rongokea said.

“She may be known to many Cook Islanders as the Black Pearls manager, but she has made the tough decision to follow her true passion, which lies in coaching.

“She is highly skilled with over 10 years of coaching experience, and as she is a former Black Pearl who has competed in the World Youth Netball Cup (1996) and the Netball World Cup (1999), we are very fortunate to have a coach of her calibre join us.”

Sebon Will, who is well known in netball circles, was also the assistant coach of the Black Pearls, Rongokea said.

“She was part of the successful management team that led the Black Pearls to the gold medal win in Samoa at the Pacific Games, and a bronze medal finish in Singapore at the Nations Cup.

“She has a huge amount of experience and knowledge to impart on our young and upcoming netball stars and we can’t wait for this formidable team to get started.”

Rongokea said trials for the U21 side to compete in the Qualifying Tournament in June this year, would be held locally only, for the first time.

“Our qualifying New Zealand and Australian Cook Islands U21 players are strongly encouraged to attend, and fight for their place in what promises to be a fantastic team.”

“Dates for the trial are February 6-8, next year (Waitangi Weekend), and it will be an intensive few days of fitness, drills, and of course netball.

“Registrations will be available in the New Year but we encourage all overseas players to book their airfares now so you don’t miss out.”
