The 2020 Rarotonga Netball Competition has been postponed. Mii Maui, Netball Cook Islands president, said the executives and its members/clubs have made a collective decision to postpone the competition until May 1.

The decision was made in regards to Covid-19, responding to recommendations made by the Ministry of Health and Cook Islands Sports and National Olympic Committee, she said.

“While this may be disappointing for some, postponing netball for the time being is in everyone’s best interests as the wellbeing of our players, coaches, umpires, supporters and the wider netball community is our top priority,” Maui said.

“The executives wishes to advise everyone to keep up to date with the advise from Ministry of Health and the Cook Islands government, remain safe and take all proactive measures as recommended.”

The weekly competition kicked off two week ago with six clubs participating, Titikaveka, Avatiu, Tupapa, Takuvaine, Ngatangiia and Arorangi.

The significant difference in this year’s competition is the increase in age group players from 8 and under to 15 and under.

Mii Maui earlier said: “What would normally be a registered team of 10-12 per team has significantly grown to approximately 15-20 players per team.

“The growth is rewarding for Netball Cook Islands, and brings about an opportunity to re-look at what we offer locally in terms of tournaments or competitions in the local competition calendar to capture this age group interest and increase.”
