Arch-rivals Avatiu and Titikaveka will go head to head in round one of the Rarotonga Netball Club competition today.
The national domestic season, which started on Wednesday with the open ladies competition, will see the remaining round one matches played at three different venues today.
Takuvaine will host Arorangi at the Happy Valley and Tupapa will take on Ngatangiia at Victoria courts. But it is the Avatiu versus Titikaveka clash that will see plenty of fireworks on and off the court.
Avatiu lost the premier netball title to Titikaveka in a fierce battle last year after going down 43-49 in a closely-contested affair.
The home team will come out fired to avenge last year’s loss and to get their 2020 season off to a grand start.
Kopu Anguna, Netball Cook Islands’ vice-president local competition, said 2020 had brought about a fresh chapter to the local netball competition. “Alongside some new members on the local competition committee, an apparent increase in player numbers is clearly obvious,” Anguna said.
“On Wednesday the Open Ladies 1 and 2 displayed some vibrant and exciting games. It demonstrates the keen interests still maintained by ‘retired’ players who continue to love the game of netball.”
Anguna said they were looking forward to some spectacular display of local talents in the remaining grades today.
“So please venture over to where your club is playing and give your girls a rousing support.
“We are urging all teams to play fair and enjoy their year’s netball journey. Best of luck to all the teams.”
All games will start at 11am. Door entry is $2 – this will go towards ongoing costs of the clubs.
