Of all the natural disasters in the Cook Islands’ recorded history, Cyclone Martin was the most tragic. Before Martin hit Manihiki on 1 November 1997, the Cook Islands had lost six people to cyclones in more than a century. Martin stole 19 lives.
This is a story about survival, what it takes and what it means. A testament to the resistance of the island people and the strength of their spirit. It’s a story about love – the glue that binds people to their communities and Polynesians to their land and reminds us that humans are not in charge.
