Tennis Cook Islands kicks off its first international tournament sponsored by Next Shipment this afternoon. The tournament will culminate in the finals on Saturday.

The tournament has 76 entries across various categories that will see an exciting lineup of singles, doubles, and mixed doubles matches, showcasing talent and sportsmanship.

Around 30 players from Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia are participating in the Tennis Cook Islands International Open event that starts at 3pm each day at the tennis courts in Nikao.

Jason Pierre, tournament director and executive member of Tennis Cook Islands, said a multiple winner of New Zealand masters women’s national singles champion as well as multiple representative players from across New Zealand will be joining the event.

“The doubles events will be very competitive and the fields are closely matched in level so we’re hoping the home court advantage will help the locals, but it’s anyone’s for the taking,” said Pierre.

He said there aren’t many opportunities to play people from other countries, “so this is a really good opportunity to have a match with someone different”.

And the timing couldn’t be better for the Cook Islands Nations Cup team of Luke Pierre, Soko Teinakirahi, Raetea Rongo, Tayla Beddoes and Hinano Ellingham who are also playing in the event.

With the team gearing up to represent the Cook Islands in American Samoa the following week, the tournament is an ideal preparation ground, fostering team spirit and an important build-up before they depart.

“We are looking forward to tough matches and a good wrap-up on Saturday night at the club,” said Pierre.

Spectators are warmly invited to join in the festivities. Head down to the Nikao Tennis courts to witness some thrilling tennis action first-hand.
