Golfers take to the green

Top golfers will be battling it out in the three-day 2021 Rarotonga Amateur Golf Open which tees off today at the Rarotonga Golf Club course in Nikao.

The second edition of the annual 54-hole tournament is limited to 128 golfers.

The Rarotonga Open is a World Amateur Golf Ranking sanctioned event and points may be awarded based on the strength of the field.

The competing golfers will be battling it out for a pool of prizes worth more than $5000 sponsored by major sponsor Toa Gas and supported by the Edgewater Resort and Spa, The Computer Man, Prime Foods, Ride Rarotonga, the Bond Store, Rarotonga Brewery, and Toa Petroleum. The open winner prizes include a 3 Burner Stainless Steel BBQ valued $800 from Toa Gas and Yedoo Dragster Bicycle worth $890 sponsored by Ride Rarotonga.

The men’s open and women’s open championships, starting today, will be played on gross on the back course. In addition to the open championships, the field will also be divided into handicap divisions, with division prizes based on gross. The 60+ veteran men and women will play on overall nett on the front course.

The event started on Tuesday with the veterans followed by Chicken Run and opening night dinner last night at the Golf Club.

The opening round will be held today followed by round two tomorrow and final round (draw seeded in divisions) to be held on Saturday, followed by prize giving and closing dinner featuring a live band.

The entry fee is $100 per person and includes opening night dinner, the final night dinner and entertainment, plus daily sweep prizes for NTP’s (nearest to the point), longest drives, and best rounds.
