Police have closed one of Tonga's busiest roads because of concerns for safety.

Police say the 35km-long Taufa'ahau Road which runs through Nuku'alofa's CBD is being closed so that road signs and markings can be put up.

No timeframe has been mentioned for when the road will re-open.

Taufa'ahau Road is the only paved road that connects Nuku'alofa to Tonga's main airport.
