I am writing to you as a continuing returning tourist whose family have rewardingly participated in most tourist activities the island has to offer over approximately a 20-year period.

On Thursday, my family and I were traumatised for the first and hopefully the last time as whilst participating in the quad bike tour we watched a family member crash heavily with the quad bike they were riding landing on top of them down a 3-metre gully, and although the family member was very lucky to only sustain minor injuries, the injuries could have been quite horrific. The inexperienced family member was taken on a wet and dangerous track without the tour operator ensuring the person was capable and confident of handling not only the quad bike but also the terrain.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and is a tool that needs to be used to prevent such an accident from reoccurring and apart from the Police I read that the Ministry of Internal Affairs are the governing body that oversees workplace safety with mandated policies and procedures that are aimed at preventing workplace injuries from happening that include a workplace reporting process that only requires an investigation if someone obtains a major injury.

I think it’s time the CI policies are updated appropriately to ensure all workplace accidents are investigated especially when the public are involved and subsequent actions implemented to prevent reoccurrence, and prevent harm.
