Letter: Cut the red tape, end prohibition

Dear Editor, It’s obvious the Government cannot come up with a plan for the legalisation of medicinal cannabis.

So the time has come to cut through all this red tape and just legalise marijuana already because prohibition isn’t working and the majority of Cook Islanders are either going to be using it for medicinal or recreational purposes anyways.

I respectfully ask the Prime Minister to summon the Executive Council immediately and under the regulations of the Drugs Act to amend the name or description of the substance marijuana.

To amend the substance marijuana would in this case be to delete it entirely from the Drugs Act and just treat it like any other plant that grows on this island and cultivators and sellers would be subject to taxation.

The Prime Minister wants a marijuana law that is unique and meets the aspirations of our people, and this certainly fits the bill. We need to face up to the truth.

Please get it done before Christmas so we can put an end to all this nonsense.

I would like to wish everyone a Blessed Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Steve Boggs.
