A Rarotonga man in his 60s was rushed to the hospital yesterday after the rental car he was driving smashed into a wooden power pole in Tupapa.

The accident took place just after 4pm on the main road between the Cook Islands Game Fishing Club and Club Raro Resort.

Police received the call at 4.33pm.

Police spokesperson Trevor Pitt said the driver was found unconscious and taken to the hospital for further examination. Police were not aware of the extent of injuries yesterday but have requested for blood specimen to determine the cause of the accident.

“The driver was heading towards Matavera when he hit into a wooden power poll which snapped from the impact of the crash,” Pitt said.

The crash left debris on the road and traffic was redirected to the back road before the area was cleared.

A senior sergeant who is a crash forensic expert was at the scene conducting preliminary investigations yesterday.
