An intoxicated tourist who was held in custody earlier this week has been advised to seek legal advice after her case was adjourned to April 24.

Irene Joy Edwards appeared before Justice of the Peace John Whitta at the Criminal Court in Avarua on Thursday after she was arrested and remanded into custody upon arrival at the Rarotonga International Airport on Tuesday night, April 16.

Edwards is charged with drunk in a public place, indecent obscene language in a public place, and resisting police.

She is alleged to have arrived off a flight heavily intoxicated and disruptive upon arrival at the terminal. When taken to the Police Headquarters in Avarua, she is further alleged to have been uncooperative, aggressive, and used obscene language.

She is also alleged to have resisted a police officer who was carrying out their duties.

Police prosecutor senior sergeant Fairoa Tararo did not object to bail and asked that her passport be surrendered to the court.

In an earlier report, police said Edwards is in Rarotonga with a large visiting group. At the court, a woman speaking on behalf of Edwards told the court they had arrived two-three days ago and expected to leave Rarotonga in 10 days. She was concerned with the adjournment of the case.

JP Whitta said Edwards is facing two minor charges and another was a serious matter, for which she needed a lawyer. He understood she had come for a holiday.

JP Whitta adjourned the matter to next week and ordered bail conditions of which Edwards is not to consume alcohol, not to purchase alcohol, and not to enter liquor-licensed premises.

She is allowed to enter restaurants but not to purchase or consume alcohol.
