A yacht, damaged and blown off course, was forced to seek help in Rarotonga this weekend – despite the border closure.

The US-flagged SV Marauder was sailing from Hawai‘i to French Polynesia, the home of the seven people on board.

The captain radioed for help, requesting assistance with fuel and supplies, said Cook Islands Principal Immigration Officer Kairangi Samuela.

“Marine Border Security assistance was provided, using Covid-19 response protocols.”

The crew had to be quarantined on the yacht, while a border security response team led by Harbour Master John Jessie, and supported by police, helped them refuel. They were all wearing full personal protective equipment.
