Fresh flowers for Turama

Flowers, colour, candles and light last night adorned graves all over the islands.

Martina Akaruru, left, is one of the many faithful who decorated the resting place of a loved one – her father, the former deputy prime minister Inatio Akaruru, CBE.

She and her family adorned the grave with beautiful fresh flowers, turning cemeteries like the Catholic one at Panama into a colourful Day of the Dead fiesta.

Yesterday’s All Saints Day and today’s All Souls Day (more commonly known as Turama) are when Christians remember the faithful departed. Catholics, and some other religious denominations on the island, come together this week.

Turama is a time when families and friends gather together cleaning and decorating graves, remembering their loved ones.
