Assault charge after throwing incident

Ratu Savenaca Virivirisai appeared before Justice of the Peace John Whitta in the Cook Islands High Court on Thursday morning.

The Fijian national is facing one charge of assaulting a female and another of assault with the intent to injure.

It is believed Virivirisai was involved in an incident which occurred on April 22 in Nikao. A young Fijian national was allegedly thrown from the top level of a two-storey building, receiving serious injuries including a spinal injury. The victim was subsequently flown to Fiji for medical attention.

Virivirisai has been in custody for over a week now. He is employed by Malcolm Sword and works on the boats which travel to the outer islands.

Virivirisai’s lawyer Norman George is still waiting for disclosure of the facts from the police. However, Virivirisai still managed to receive bail, despite a number of conditions being imposed.

He was made to surrender his passport, check-in regularly with the police, and must notify the police when he is travelling for work purposes.
