Cook Islands will host the 37th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Australia and Pacific Regional Conference 2018, starting on Monday next week.

The three-day conference will be held at the Edgewater Resort and Spa in Arorangi.

Prime Minister Henry Puna in an invitation letter to the members of the CPA said it would be an honour to host them at this year’s conference.

He said during the conference they could share and exchange information while embarking and maintaining the faith in achieving the theme “Towards a Common Future for Growth and Sustainability.”

Puna also said the theme which was initiated from Her Majesty, The Queen’s Commonwealth Day Message for 2018 equally echoed the country’s National Sustainable Development Goals – key elements in building and shaping our society.

Her Majesty said: “We all have reason to give thanks for the numerous ways in which our lives are enriched when we learn from others. Through exchanging ideas, and seeing life from other perspectives, we grow in understanding and work more collaboratively towards a common future. There is a very special value in the insights we gain through the Commonwealth connection; shared inheritances help us overcome difference so that diversity is a cause for celebration rather than division.”

Puna stated: “As one of the smallest Parliaments in the Commonwealth faced with big challenges, the message by Her Majesty, The Queen provides elements of motivation and confidence to overlook these challenges and to maintain a vibrant and positive attitude towards the parliamentary role that we are totally committed to uphold.”

The official opening of the conference will be held on Monday, starting at 8.30am.

The keynote address will be delivered by Emilia Monjowa Lifaka, the chairperson of the CPA executive committee and the deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Cameroon.

The conference will be co-chaired by Cook Islands Speaker of Parliament Nikki Rattle and Peter Watson, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia.
