Anonymous sources close to the case of a baby abandoned in the Turangi area on Saturday morning have come forward to clarify the circumstances of its discovery.

They said the baby was found in the corner of a plantation underneath a piece of discarded roofing iron, still attached to the placenta, by a boy picking tiare maori in Turangi.

The baby was taken to Rarotonga hospital by ambulance and according to police, mother and baby are both well.

Police are continuing to investigate the matter.
