Following the successful debut of the Men’s Netball Competition which concluded last month, Netball Cook Islands (NCI) has set its sight on the upcoming Men’s World Cup in 2024.

Netball Cook Islands secretary Tekura Moekaa said the first-ever Men’s Netball Competition proved to be an outstanding success.

The men’s netball community rallied together, and six teams entered the competition, showcasing the growing popularity and recognition of men’s netball. The success of this inaugural event has already paved the way for a promising future, Netball CI announced intentions to make this a yearly tradition.

Looking back at the final results of the competition, Moekaa said emerging as the team to beat right from the onset, the Empire squad displayed remarkable cohesion and talent on the court.

She said under the captaincy of Johnjones Eliu, they proved to be an unstoppable force, remaining unbeaten throughout the competition.

Empire was crowned champions after defeating Toa Fusion 54-39.

Moekaa said: “Their relentless efforts and exceptional teamwork secured them the coveted trophy and a generous cash prize, courtesy of sponsors Hartal Shop and Laundry and the Rae and Henry Tupa Family.”

She said Toa Fusion, despite a slow start, demonstrated great resilience and tenacity as they fought hard to catch up.

“Although they couldn’t claim the top spot, their display of grit and skill was commendable and left a lasting impression on everyone present.”

In the battle for third place, the Spice Guys and Shine on Fiji competed in a nail-biting contest that kept fans at the edge of their seats.

Moekaa said the Shine on Fiji’s short game tactics initially gave them an advantage, but the Spice Guys managed to find their rhythm just in time.

“Drawing the match in the final minute of the fourth quarter, they forced the game into extra time. Ultimately, the Spice Guys triumphed, clinching third place in a thrilling fashion.” They won 47–43.

Moekaa said the success of the Men’s Netball Competition would not have been possible without the generous support of the sponsors, Hartal Shop and Laundry, as well as the Rae and Henry Tupa Family.

Netball CI acknowledged the officials, including the umpires and bench officials, who ensured the smooth running of the matches and fairness throughout the competition.

“A heartfelt thank you to all the participating teams – Empire, Toa Fusion, Spice Guys, Shine on Fiji Men’s, Shine on Fiji Mixed, National Wider Squad. Your passion for the sport and outstanding performances contributed to the overwhelming success of this inaugural event,” she said.

“You have undoubtedly set the bar high for future editions of the Men’s Netball Competition.”
