Matavera hosted the first Just Play Village Festival for the year on Tuesday last week and it didn’t disappoint.

Almost 90 children filled the Takitumu School field to enjoy a fun yet educational day.

This month’s festival promoted awareness for next week’s Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) Week with the theme “Water is Best”, and children were taught about making healthier choices.

Children engaged in fun sports and activities and learned how healthy eating can help their bodies grow big and strong. They also learned the importance of choosing water over sugary drinks – which should only be consumed as treats.  Representatives from the Ministry of Health were also on hand to reinforce the health messages, providing children with an opportunity to understand why “water is best!”

During the education sessions with the Ministry of Health, children eagerly shouted out some surprising answers, showcasing what they learnt at previous Just Play festivals.

Taking turns to share their answers and play the games and activities, children demonstrated “respect”, another one of Just Play’s theme and a focus of previous festivals.

The next Just Play Village Festival will take place on March 12 in Rutaki.  Please keep your eye out for shop posters, newspaper or television promotion.
