Under perfect blue skies following a week of rain, more than 1500 fans packed the stadium to witness the undefeated Panthers complete their fairytale season with a championship win, delivering a classy performance that ended in a 32–12 win.
The game ignited early with Panthers’ star playmaker Mafu Kalas – dubbed the “little general” – putting on a masterclass. Within the opening five minutes, Kalas sliced through the Bears' defence for the opening try and calmly slotted the conversion. Minutes later, he added a spectacular diving corner try and followed it up with another successful kick to push Tupapa ahead 12–0.
Kalas finished the match with a staggering personal tally of 20 points, scoring two tries, four conversions, and two penalty goals, along with two try assists. His fantastic performance earned him the Grand Final Player of the Match honours.
The Panthers took to the field in their eye-catching hot pink jerseys, making a bold statement from the outset, with the Bears appearing in their historic bold red and black.
Both teams brought not only passion and pride but also drums and colours to the pitch. The Panthers' purple and black-clad supporters filled the eastern side of the field, while the Bears’ red sea of fans roared from the west. The atmosphere was charged as both camps turned the stadium into a battleground of spirit and support.
Despite a gallant effort from the Arorangi Bears, who showed flashes of brilliance and grit, the Panthers’ speed, structure, and discipline proved too much.
Panthers head coach Darren Piri praised his team’s commitment and execution: “Like any other game, it all comes down to performance on the day. I take my hat off to the boys – they did the work. My coaching and management staff – Deewhy, Maru, Andrew, Tom, Joe – all played their part. It’s been a team effort from start to finish.”
Hinting at stepping back from coaching duties, Piri added, “I think it’s time for me to hang my thinking hat and just help the club in other ways.”
Panthers captain Eric Newbigging, who was awarded the prestigious Cook Islands Rugby League Player of the Year (2025) John Whittaker trophy, also reflected on the league season.
“It’s been a team effort all season. We never gave up, and today we played for each other. I’m honoured to receive this award, but it belongs to all the boys who gave it their all.”
Arorangi Bears captain Basil Matapo showed good sportsmanship and respect in defeat: “We knew it was going to be a 50-50 game. And full credit to Tupapa – they’ve been consistent all season. Hats off to Darren, Eric, and the boys for an outstanding undefeated campaign.”
Despite the loss, Matapo looked ahead with optimism toward the upcoming Town and Country League Tournament in a few weeks, where players from around the island will join forces.
“We look forward to linking up with our brothers from across the island – that’s what rugby league is all about. Thank you also to all our supporters for coming out to support us.”
