The match saw Country come out strong in the first half, leading the game early on. However, like the previous week when they couldn’t maintain the momentum, the Blues bounced back in the last 40 minutes, held their ground and secured a 28-20 win over the Maroons after a tough battle.
This weekend’s game featured the best players representing their respective clubs - Town comprising the Tupapa Maraerenga Panthers, Avatiu Eels, and Takuvaine Warriors; while the Country side included the Ngatangiia Matavera Sea Eagles, Titikaveka Bulldogs, and Arorangi Bears.
Named Most Valuable Player of the match was Olive Willie from the Town Blues.
Willie delivered a standout performance, described by officials as “blockbusting.” With powerful runs, multiple line and tackle breaks, impressive metres gained, and rock-solid defence, the young talent proved a game-changer on the field.
Special mentions also went out to several other standout players. For the Town Blues: Mafu Kalas, Peter Lagilagi, and Kana Nga all made strong contributions. On the Country Maroons side, Taio Taio, Henry Mataio, Tua Herman, and James Strickland were recognised for their efforts.
The deciding Game 3 of the Origins series will take place this Saturday at Aretere Park in Avatiu. Rugby league fans can expect another fierce showdown as both sides aim to take the series title.
