Tupapa Panthers I and Rarotonga claimed the men’s and women’s titles at the Cook Islands Rugby League Nines in Paradise tournament on Saturday.

A strong second half performance handed Tupapa Panthers I the Cook Islands Rugby League Nines in Paradise title on Saturday.

The Darren Piri-coached side defeated Avatiu Eels 32-26 in a closely-contested final at the National Stadium in Nikao.

The Panthers, who claimed $5000 prizemoney, overcame 2020 champions Arorangi Bears 29-17 in the semi-final while the Eels beat Aitutaki Sharks 29-14.

The Sharks won the third-place playoff, overcoming the Bears 20-19.

Jovilisi Naqitawa of Tupapa Panthers received the player of the tournament award.

In the women’s final, the Sharlene Atai-led Rarotonga defeated Tupapa Panthers 11-8 in another close final.

An impressive Kaiyah Atai, daughter of former Kiwi Sharlene, received the player of the tournament award.

In the women’s third-place playoff, Bears defeated Pae Enua 31-9.
