The ANZ junior cricket season got off to a cracking start on Tuesday when the islands top junior women cricketers gathered at Titikaveka College for the inter-college girls cricket tournament.

The 5 teams from 3 schools that contested the tournament were the Titikaveka Titans, Titikaveka Remix, Tereora Eels, Tereora Panthers and the Papaaroa Aces.

After an action-packed day which included five rounds of games the Titikaveka Titans emerged the unbeaten champions of the tournament to lift the inter-college girls tournament trophy in front of a strong home crowd.

Kara Matenga of the Titikaveka Titans took away the top batter award scoring 80 runs for the day.

Tu Te Maeva Poaru of Tereora Eels and a product of the Avatiu womens cricket club, along with Tini Tararo of the Tereora Panthers, jointly won the top bowler award taking 5 wickets apiece.

The junior cricket excitement is not over yet as the boys tournament, which was postponed yesterday due to rain, will be scheduled for the next sunny day where theres sure to be just as much action as the girls tournament.
