The fifth round of the Edgewater Saturday Premier Womens Championship saw some great action over the weekend with the temperature not the only thing heating up on the field.

Arorangi Red Hot Chicks were seeking to move to the top of the table and guarantee themselves a finals berth and home advantage against the girls from Avana.

Batting first, Avana looked to assert dominance on the Raemaru Park pitch. Lina Taufahema (38) led from start to finish, and consolidated Avanas innings amid some fine bowling from the Red Hot Chicks pace attack.

Avana set 87 runs for Arorangi to chase, with Deana Paiti best of the bowlers with two wickets for eight runs off four overs.

Avana got off to a good start, dismissing Margaret Dean for no score.

Moeroa Matheson (27) stepped up with well timed boundaries to steady the ship and any hint of an upset with captain Diana Tamaiva (14) taking the Red Hot Chicks home and top honours going into the finals weekend.

Muri and Turangi did battle at Nukupure Park, with Muri needing the win to have a chance at reaching second position and the final next week.

Muri scored 119 runs and dismissed Turangi for 74 runs to give the Creep girls the victory.

Muri captain Punanga Kaveao credited the win to a strong performance on the field with tight bowling creating plenty of chances for them.

The women have also been busy in the Edgewater Super 8s Championship, which is entering the business end of the season and had some explosive action expected out on the pitch.

Turangi Cheeky Babes were looking for payback against the girls from Titikaveka with Kapiri Tangimetua (32 not out) and Emily Monga (30) going boomtown with the bat to take the Cheeky Babes to 105 runs.

In reply, the mother and daughter combination of Margaret (32 not out) and Luciana Matenga (37 not out) proved the match-winner, with 13 boundaries shared between them to reach 106 runs in the 11th over to remain unbeaten in the competition.

The Takuvaine Devils were looking for a change in fortune against the Turangi Whimps at the Valley.

Batting first, Takuvaine found the going tough, amidst some precise bowling from the Whimps with Ina Willie taking three wickets for just five runs to restrict the Devils to 53.

Turangi Whimps made short work of the run chase with Daena Kataina (21 not out) and Grace Ngarua (18 not out) reaching the total for an emphatic seven-run victory.

The Muri Creep Girls battled it out with the Avana Knights in an exciting match which went right down to the wire with Muri winning by five runs.
