More fun to come for junior netters

More fun netball tournaments are on the cards for junior netball lovers after last Fridays successful first Potiki Navenave junior netball tournament for under 8 and 10 players.

Netball Cook Islands development officer and tournament coordinator Luciana Matenga has returned to her drawing board to map out regular tournaments for junior netballers.

I have the passion for netball in me so when I go out to the schools its not difficult to share that with kids who love their netball, says Matenga.

Due to the success of the fun tournament, Matenga is keen to organise more tournaments to give local netters the opportunity to develop their skills before they don club uniforms to play in the domestic competition.

For Matenga the motivation behind getting children as young as 8-years-old to enjoy their netball and play it well is to one day see the country once again crowned the queens of netball in the Pacific in both the open womens and under 21 divisions.

Whats really good about coaching kids at this level is that you can stub out any bad playing habits and teach kids the correct techniques, says Matenga.

When these kids start to play for their clubs during the season they will already know how to play good netball.

The tournament was also an opportunity for budding coaches to warm into their new roles ahead of next seasons domestic competition.

Local schools, netball clubs and community groups keen to play netball or receive assistance from development officer Luciana Matenga can contact the Netball Cook Islands office on 22840.
