Masters rip it up

The Avatiu Nikao Mongoose certainly showed their dominance on the field at the league masters game last Friday at the Nikao field.

Their go forward play led by General George himself paved the way for their speedsters Casper Mateariki, Mike Mouauri and Mac Mokoroa scoring tries left, right, centre and out wide.

All credit to the Mongoose who has a very good fitness programme going for its members which includes a friendly game of touch rugby every Tuesday and Thursday right through the year.

Minister of Finance Mark Brown donned the Mongoose jersey this week and showed his class with some deceptive passing that fooled the opposition and helped him score a runaway try. Perhaps one of those techniques he perfected in parliament!

According to the fastest man on the field, referee Nga Takaiti, he was very surprised at the pace of the game being played by the old boys.

He did admit after a few too many that he did struggle to keep up with the pace of the game.

The opposing side led by CIRL President Charles Carlson was struggling to keep up with the pace of the game.

Perhaps a lesson learned by the old boys in the losing side that you have got to do some training before turning up to the field.

However, it was pleasing to hear that after the Friday game some members were seen pounding the road and even trying to jog which looks more like hobbling along but that is a good start.

The General was very apologetic to the packed crowd at the Rose garden that, due to short notice, didn’t have time to make some apuka sandwiches, carrot and dip, raw salad, boiled chicken and fruits for the after match function.

He requested that they would like to host the game again this week and will show everyone the true Mongoose hospitality both on and off the field.

So to all Mongoose members –apai mai i taau raurau e tetai manga nira ki roto ine!

Be there at Nikao Field today for the 5pm kick-off and then for the after match function at the Rose Garden.

All masters (40-plus) are most welcome but please make sure you go up the hospital today and get a new warrant of fitness before turning up to the field. Any player with an expired warrant will not be allowed on the field.
