The underdog Avatiu Eels under 13 rugby team did the damage against opponents the Tupapa Panthers on Saturday to take out the FBI Takeaways under 13 grade grand finals.

The surprise win by the Eels over the season dominating Panthers pack was a result of the Eels massive front rowers and posting points on the board early.

The baby Eels scored 2 tries in the first half through Samuel Koiatu and Ben Numanga to lead the Panthers 12-0 in the break.

Tuki Paitai got the Panthers back in the game with a try of his own but the Eels knew not to let Tupapa loose with the ball again.

The Eels then sealed the win with a try in the corner via the teams outstanding prop Teariki Ponini to give the Eels a comfortable win 17-5 and first in the age grade grand finals.

The under 13 most valuable player award for the year went to Tupapa Panthers speedster Tyron Marurai.
