These candidates were not the only challenge facing Bishop in lead up to the elections.
Last month Deputy Prime Minister Mark Brown told Parliament that the Audit Office had received a complaint into the affairs of Bishop and the Aitutaki island council.
Director of Audit Allen Parker said yesterday that they had now begun an investigation.
Parker said he could not discuss any details until they had completed their audit report and tabled it in Parliament.
Yesterday, Tekura Bishop said he didn’t know anything about any investigation against him.
But he said the results spoke for themselves, and added his priorities were to serve the people of Aitutaki and serve them well.
“Like I always say, at the end of the day its people that make the decision, it’s the biggest court,” Bishop said.
He commended the other candidates for showing interest in leading the island with their visions and goals, but said “many can run the race but one will be blessed to lead the island”.
However, Bishop said he needs their support “to drive the people of Aitutaki in one canoe”.
His immediate plan is to look for ways to deal with the Covid-19 crisis and prepare for the hosting of the 200th anniversary of the arrival of Christianity next year.
“We have to make sure we don’t get the pandemic here. We already had plans in terms of sustainability, people have already cleared the land and planted. Our island has been blessed on the land and in the water.”
