In celebration of Olympic Week last week, the Cook Islands Sports and National Olympic Committee held a fun run on Thursday.
Committee sports development manager John Glassie, welcomed over 100 keen runners and sports enthusiasts of all ages to the Punanga Nui Market for the event.
Glassie said the Olympic Day Fun Run was all about coming together and having some fun.
There were two different courses that circuited around the Punanga Nui Market and up to the roundabout in front of the Ministry of Justice.
Some participants opted for the five kilometre run and others took part in a two kilometre market walk.
Despite the rain that started coming down as the runners began the run, they all gladly pushed on.
There were teams of athletes who wore their Olympic day t-shirts in support of Olympic week and the nations fitness.
The aim of the run was to promote fitness, well-being, culture and education in commemoration of Olympic Day and the birth of the modern Olympic Games on June 23, 1894.
The worldwide celebration aims to promote, while also observing the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect.
Now, Olympic Day is celebrated on the week of June 23 every year all over the world.
In 2018 this same event was celebrated here and there were over four million participants across five continents.
The Olympic Day pillars are move, learn and discover which are promoted in every corner of the globe.
Olympic Day creates opportunities for people to participate in sport across the globe regardless of age, gender or athletic ability.
Meanwhile in celebration of World of Olympic Day, Olympians Cook Islands is launched its official website. The website features profiles of the 30 Olympians that the country has so far produced. President of Olympians Cook Islands, Erin Quirke earlier said they hoped that this online platform will encourage and enable Olympians to stay in touch with each other. It has been designed to showcase the sporting achievements of athletes as well as their current activities outside of the sporting arena.
