Siblings Rotana and William Howard are set to lead the Cook Islands golf team to the Pacific Games in Samoa this year.
The duo have been named the captains of the women’s and men’s squads, respectively, to the games which will be held from July 7 to July 20.
The women’s squad has seven golfers while the men’s six.
The team will be finalised closer to the Pacific Games.
Rotana, who has already competed in two previous Pacific Games, is looking forward to the challenge.
She was part of the women’s team that won bronze medal at the 2015 games in Papua New Guinea and at the 2017 Mini Games in Vanuatu,
she managed a silver medal.
“The challenge is gold medal this time. I’m excited with this challenging opportunity given to me and I look forward to it,” Rotana said.
“We are hoping to get some good practice in the coming weeks and the weekly competition will surely provide us with the opportunity to lift our game.”
The ladies squad also include Memory Akama, Margaret Teiti, Katey Karati, Moeroa Matheson, Jacquiline Urlich and Rowena Newbigging. Apart from William, the men’s team also has Daniel Webb, Royle Brogan, Kris Williamson, James Herman and Jojo Karati.
Meanwhile the weekly competition kicked off with the Steinlager tournament at the Rarotonga Golf Club course in Nikao on Saturday.
Veteran golfer Tai Manuela claimed the season opener after recording 78 gross and 45 points. He walked away with a brand new fridge full of sponsor Lion Nathan products.
Adam Turrall on 84 gross and 42 points finished second followed by Eddie Marama, who managed 76 gross and 41 points.
Club manager Leanne Browne said the season started with a bang with golfers putting on a strong performance for some valuable prizes that were at stake.
“It was such a blessing to have a beautiful day for golf and the whole vibe just tops up the entire day and night,” Browne said.
“A big thank you to the management and staff of The Bond Store and Lion Nathan, who kindly sponsored our opening day tournament with such amazing prizes.
“It’s always been an event that members look forward to every year and the prizes just keeps blooming that creates a ‘wow reaction’ from our members.”
