Omoka student receives grant to join Tereora
Year 10 Overall Academic of Omoka School and recipient of scholarship to Tereora College, Melina Mamia. 21121023.

Penrhyn schools of Omoka and Tetautua held their prize-giving events separately last week and consequently, the principal of both schools Apii Napa had to cross the lagoon highway to attend the event at Tetautua.

It was everything Christmassy – Christmas tree, Christmas décor, and Christmas songs – at this year’s prize-giving ceremonies at the two schools.

Penrhyn Island’s Omoka School Year 10 student Melina Mamia was excited to receive the Overall Academic award.

“My drive this year was to try and get a scholarship to further my educational studies at Tereora College next year,” Mamia said.

“I’m bored and I needed a challenge that will keep me going.”

Mamia is the lone recipient of the scholarship from the northern group island to Tereora College next year.

Every awardee received a trophy, cash priz,e and gift packs from sponsors CITC, BCI, and Vodafone Cook Islands.

Schools principal Apii Napa said the children were all wide-eyed and excited upon receiving their prizes, adding most kids in the North never dreamed that such an occasion could be possible.

“The kids really showed their appreciation and I’d like to acknowledge our sponsors, especially CITC, BCI, and Vodafone for their generous support towards the Penrhyn schools prize-giving event,” she said.

Napa would also like to thank Vaine Arioka, Mii Joseph and the staff of our local bank BCI, Gaye Whitta and Jane Wichman from CITC, and Phillip Henderson and the Vodafone network group for bringing joy and cheer to the children of Omoka and Tetautua schools.

The children finished off the school year with a picnic on Tapuniu.

“My prayer is ... may great tithings and joy be blessed upon them. Tei mua a Tongareva. E te ra e...hi!”
