Alcohol consumption is at the top of the Christmas concern list for police as patrols ramp up over the festive season.

Multiple alcohol related arrests were reported over the weekend prompting police to report concerns over alcohol consumption will be “uppermost on the cops’ radar”.

A 28-year-old man was involved in a suspected alcohol-related crash reported near the Rarotongan Resort early Saturday morning.

He required medical attention and was subject to a blood test, police media spokesman Trevor Pitt confirmed on Monday.

“The weekend provided enough indication of what is to come as police take to monitoring the roads, bars, and functions around the island,” Pitt said.

“The public can expect more of a police presence in the community over Christmas and the New Year.

“While the festive season is upon us, police want to advise the public to exercise more care on the road and while out and about attending events and gatherings.

“Don’t abuse the consumption of alcohol during what should be a joyous, celebratory time.”

Meanwhile, on Sunday morning, another suspected alcohol-related motorbike crash was reported near the Rarotongan Resort.

A blood specimen has also been sought from the 45-year-old male driver involved.

Late Sunday afternoon, a 35-year-old man was arrested for drunkenness in a public place, after a complaint was received from a hotel in Avarua.

A 41-year-old woman was also arrested and charged with assault on Sunday following a complaint from another female.

She was bailed to appear in court on Thursday.

During the weekend, Police also attended to noise complaints, a theft complaint, one stolen motorbike, and a report of a pack of dogs attacking a cow.

And shortly after 12 noon on Sunday an incident was reported at Tupapa where a teenage boy fell from the back of a pickup truck while minding a paddle board.

Police were told the youth fell back when wind blew the board off.

He was admitted to hospital for observation due to bruising to the back of the head.
