A 21-year-old man has appeared in the Criminal Court on a burglary charge following an incident at an Arorangi store early Sunday morning.

Tupouatimo Hagai Noa was remanded in custody when he appeared before Justice of the Peace Bernice Manarangi on Thursday.

Noa was arrested and taken into custody on Tuesday following the weekend incident. Police allege he stole a carton of beer.

Security footage and other incriminating evidence had led to the arrest while it was reported a glass door had been smashed to gain entry to the shop and damage was also reported to an ATM nearby the scene of the burglary.

The police prosecutor said he had been instructed to ask for the defendant to remain in custody for another week.

“He is facing serious burglary charges, it is new in terms of investigation,” the police prosecutor said.

“We ask that he be remanded for another week as there was substantial damage and it may be costly.”

JP Manarangi agreed the matter was ongoing and remanded Hagai Noa in custody until November 25.
