A man has had a charge of careless driving causing injury withdrawn in the Criminal Court at Avarua on Thursday.

Charge withdrawn

Lloyd Williams had a charge of careless driving causing injury withdrawn in the Criminal Court at Avarua on Thursday.

The court heard the victim wanted the matter withdrawn.

Police said they believed there was some mediation between Williams and the victim and there was some compensation paid for injuries.

Williams is currently in New Zealand and had to pay a bail bond to be allowed to leave the Cook Islands.

Williams’ lawyer Lavi Rokoika asked for the bond to be paid back.

Justice of the Peace, Tangi Taoro withdrew the matter.

Not guilty plea to

assault on a female

Jovilisi Duvuloco pleaded not guilty to assault on a female at Thursday’s Criminal Court at Avarua.

Duvuloco entered the plea through his lawyer Lavi Rokoika, who also requested a defended hearing.

Justice of the Peace, Tangi Taoro adjourned the hearing for today.

Rokoika said the matter should not take more than 10 minutes of the courts time.

Drink driving

Abraham Christopher pleaded guilty to excess blood alcohol and careless driving in the Criminal Court at Avarua on Thursday.

The plea was taken through Christopher’s lawyer Lavi Rokoika.

The court heard Christopher was over four times the legal limit and had no previous convictions.

Justice of the Peace Tangi Taoro disqualified Christopher from driving for 12 months and fined him.

Indecent assault  

Hyrum Ulberg who has previously pleaded guilty to indecent assault will represent himself during sentencing.

Ulberg’s lawyer Mark Short on Thursday told the Criminal Court that his client wanted to represent himself for sentencing.

Short asked Justice of the Peace Tangi Taoro if he could withdraw as legal counsel for Ulberg, which was granted.
