Aitutaki was the venue for this year’s Henry family reunion, which was attended by about 120 people.
The oldest relative attending was Mama Rangi Henry-Pito Maki at the age of 93, while the youngest family member at the reunion was just three months old.
Arama and Mata Henry’s oldest child was Poko Henry, who married Henry Nicholas, and so the Nicholas descendants were part of the reunion as well and made up the largest lineage there.
The five-day event started with a ceremony introducing the family tree updates, such as newborns, deaths and new partners, as well as family achievements.
Family came from as far afield as Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Samoa and Hawaii, with some staying at Reureu Hall, which also served as the reunion headquarters.
Over the five days family enjoyed a bus tour around the island looking at significant family sites and held a dedication and memorial service at the family tombs at Arutanga. They also took part in a Maina Island and lagoon excursion, including a trip to One Foot Island, and competed in an Ambrose-format golf challenge.
The first Henry family reunion was held in Rarotonga in 2012, followed by Ohope Beach in New Zealand in 2015, where 400 members attended. At the end of the stay on Aitutaki it was decided that their next reunion will be held back on Rarotonga in April 2021.
