Cook Islands Triathlon Association (CITAI) held the 43rd Maori Auri Tinman on Saturday where Postrzygacz claimed her first Maori Auri Tinman win.
Association president Roland Neururer said the weather on Saturday was windy and sunny, but all competitors were worried about the sea condition’s strong current.
However, this did not deter the 20 plus strong athletes from their afternoon pursuit.
The race was a 1200m swim, followed by a 31km cycle and a 10k run had a field of 17 individual and 6 teams competing.
The individual race had some strong competition with David Robati, Roland Neururer and Jason Moorfield battling hard for top honors in the men’s field and Maya Postrzygacz, Brooke Ross and Olivia Postrzygacz in the women’s event.
Neururer says that at the same time the teams, who each completed one or two of the disciplines were trying to get ahead of the individual competitors and their opposing team rivals in the hard thought team battle, with the top guns of Serena Hunter, Alyce Nicholson, and Paul Dobinson to go for the big prize.
The swim had a strong current and this made it very difficult for all competitors. Average swim time was over 3 minutes slower from usual times.
Out of the water first was David Robati, in 19:28, with Maya Postrzygacz and Serena Hunter hot on his heels.
Onto the bike and a nice tail wind made the first part nice to ride, until the seawall when we all had strong head and side wind almost to the end.
Strength on the run is often what makes the day and this was true for David Robati who had the fastest run in individual men competition to claim his first win in a time of 2:05:54, with Roland Neururer 2nd place and Jason Moorfield 3rd place respectively.
In the women's individual event, Maya Postrzygacz claimed her first Maori Auri Tinman win, with Brook Ross just 5 second behind Olivia Postrzygacz 3rd.
In the team event, team Serena, Alyce & Paul, crossed the line first, and were also 1st overall home team in a time of 2:04:00, All for One Team coming home 2nd and Geoff & Paul team 3rd place.
CITA’s next big and final event will be the Air New Zealand Triathlon, held on Saturday, May 3, 2025. CITAI
