Tupapa, Puaikura claim football titles
The Tupapa Maraerenga versus Nikao match ended in a 2-2 draw.

Spectators were at the edge of their seats during the thrilling match between the Nikao and Tupapa premier men on Saturday.

Tupapa Maraerenga and Puaikura have claimed the Round Cup Championship titles after winning their matches on Saturday.

Puaikura extended their lead in the women’s division after beating Avatiu 3-1 at Raemaru Park in Arorangi.

With two more rounds to go, the side sits comfortably on top on 34 points – 10 points ahead of second placed Tupapa who lost to Nikao 0-2 at the weekend.

Puaikura won 11 and drew and lost one each from the 13 matches they have played so far this season.

In the men’s competition, defending champions Tupapa Maraerenga were held by arch-rivals Nikao Sokattak two-all. But the draw was enough to hand them the Round Cup Championship title.

With 10 wins, two draws and loss, Tupapa has extended their lead to 32 points – seven points clear of Nikao who is placed second on 25 points.

Against Nikao on Saturday, Tupapa’s Grover Harmon scored the opener through a spectacular long shot that caught the opposing goalkeeper off guard, taking an early 1-0 lead.

The side retained possession for most of the first half and created many more opportunities but were unable to get more goals.

Nikao’s Tamaiva Mateariki levelled the score towards the end of the opening spell after blasting the ball into the top right corner.

Both teams went into the break locked at 1-all.

As the second half got underway, the crowd energy intensified with both teams continuously finding opportunities to score.

Nikao captalised on one of their scoring opportunities to take 2-1 lead through the boots of the younger sibling Toru Mateariki.

The match was not yet over though as both teams fought tirelessly to the bitter end. A handball in Nikao’s goal box saw Tupapa seize the opportunity to even the scores.

After an adrenaline fueled 90 minutes, the match ended in a well fought out draw giving Tupapa the outcome they required to take the Round Cup Championship for 2020.

In the senior women’s division Nikao Sokattak grabbed their greatest win of the season against second placed Tupapa. Nikao outpaced Tupapa in the midfield and on the attack to win 2-0.
