In honour of the late Diego Armando Maradona and in solidarity with his family and everyone who loved him so much, the flags at Cook Islands Football Association headquarters are being flown at half-mast.

Cook Islands Football Association will pay tribute to football legend Diego Armando Maradona in the opening round of the knockout competition today.

Maradona, the Argentine maestro regarded as one of the best footballers of all time, passed away this week aged 60.

And to honour the football icon, FIFA, the international governing body, has asked all members including the Cook Islands to observe a minute of silence in their main football leagues.

In today’s premier men’s knockout matches at both the Titikaveka Sports field and Takitumu School grounds, a minute of silence will be observed to pay tribute to Maradona.

Cook Islands Football said: “Our heart-felt condolences go out to his family and the football world.”

This afternoon, the Rarotonga 2020 Football Season heads into the knockouts to determine the teams for the finals to be held next month.

In the senior women’s division Titikaveka FC will be playing Avatiu FC at Matavera Field.

Both teams played off last week in round 15 of the weekly league and the match ended in a draw. Both teams will be looking for redemption against the other in the hopes of taking a spot in the semi-final to play Tupapa Maraerenga.

At Teimurimotia Park, Nikao Sokattak and Matavera Ngatangiia FC will be fighting for a semis spot to take on top placed Puaikura FC.

Last week Matavera caused an upset after beating Nikao Sokattak on their home ground.

The Puaikura premier men’s will be facing off against Avatiu FC this afternoon at Matavera Field. Puaikura and Avatiu both suffered losses in round 15 and will be eager to secure a win today as this is a crucial match for both teams.

The winner of this match will go on to play competition runner ups, Nikao Sokattak in the semi-final.

Avatiu were able to keep Puaikura on their toes earlier in the season finishing their match with a 1-nil win on their home grounds. The Puaikura side will have to remain vigilant as they cannot afford to repeat that loss in today’s matches.

At Teimurimotia Park, host Titikaveka FC will be hoping to use the home field advantage when they take on Matavera.

The winner of this match will take on Tupapa Maraerenga in the semi-final.
