Cook Islands Football Association (CIFA) is proud to announce the launch of its first-ever Futsal Competition, “Friday Night Futsal” – a landmark event for the development of futsal in the Cook Islands.

Held at the National Sports Arena in Nikao, this exciting new competition, which kicked off last week, is set to run for six consecutive weeks, taking place every Friday evening from 4:30pm to 8pm.

The competition promises to offer fast-paced, action-packed futsal for players, fans and families to enjoy in a vibrant and supportive environment.

A total of 28 teams have registered across three key divisions, reflecting the strong interest in futsal across different age groups:

•           Mixed Juniors (10–12 years)

•           Youth Girls (13–15 years)

•           Senior Women’s and Men’s (16+ years)

The competition is a direct outcome of CIFA’s ongoing commitment to grassroots development and youth engagement, with a special focus on increasing opportunities for both boys and girls to participate in structured football activities outside of the traditional 11-a-side game.

The event has been expertly organised by CIFA’s futsal development officer, Teretia Teinaki, with the assistance and hard work of her colleagues at CIFA. Their collective efforts have brought this exciting new initiative to life, creating a new platform for young athletes and adult players to showcase their talent and love for the game.

“Week one of the competition was a huge success,” said Teinaki. “It was fantastic to see so many happy faces, eager players, and supportive families enjoying futsal in such a positive atmosphere. It’s a great start to what we hope will be a regular fixture in CIFA’s football calendar.”

The first Friday of the competition saw strong attendance and enthusiastic support from the community, as teams took to the courts for a series of high-energy matches.

The mix of junior and senior divisions created a family-friendly event where younger players could look up to older participants, fostering inspiration and community spirit.

CIFA also extends its heartfelt gratitude to Vodafone Cook Islands, the major sponsor of the Friday Night Futsal Competition. Their support has played a pivotal role in ensuring the successful delivery of this event, and CIFA is proud to work alongside partners who share a commitment to youth development and sports excellence.

A diverse and dynamic range of teams are taking part in this inaugural competition, including: Apii Nikao A, Apii Nikao B, Apii Nikao C, Barcelona, Tupapa, Titikaveka, Lady Pirahna’s, Yah Gals, Avatiu Academy, Titikaveka Girls, Amalia’s Auntayss, Power Puff Gals, Outlaws Women’s, FY-Heart, Last Minute, Bula Boys, Young Guns, NMBZ All-League, Titikaveka Women’s, Shadow Shooters, Nikao Women’s, Avatiu Women’s, Outlaws Men’s, Black Wolves, Wantoks, JMUT, On Time, Aramoana’s Kids.

CIFA wishes to thank all the registered teams for their enthusiasm and commitment to this new competition. The diversity of teams — ranging from school-based squads to community and senior club teams — highlights the growing popularity of futsal as a sport that is inclusive, accessible and fun.

Looking ahead, the Friday Night Futsal Competition is expected to serve as a key stepping stone in the development of the sport in the Cook Islands, offering more structured and regular match play for aspiring players and allowing coaches and talent scouts to identify future prospects.

The event also provides a social and family-friendly platform where the community can gather to support youth and adult athletes in a safe and enjoyable environment.

CIFA is excited to see how the competition unfolds in the coming weeks and encourages all football lovers to come down to the National Sports Arena to cheer on their favourite teams.
