Defending champions Avatiu Nikao Eels are expected to face a tough challenge from neighbours Takuvaine (TKV) Reds in the feature match of round one of the Cook Islands Rugby Union Club 15s competition at Aretere Park this afternoon.

The 2025 rugby union season kicked off yesterday with the Titikaveka Bulldogs versus the Tupapa Panthers clash. The Arorangi Bears are on bye this weekend.

Cook Islands Rugby Union development manager Ben Koteka said the Reds were on a rebuilding phase, with former players, some of whom were with the Eels previously, returning to the club for this season. Among them is Viiga Reupena, who will be guiding the Reds against his former club this afternoon.

“A majority of Samoan players who played for the Eels last season have returned to their roots and will feature for the Reds this year,” Koteka said.

“TKV have been training well and although they are on a rebuilding phase, they are expected to put on a strong perform against the Eels.”

Koteka said as the defending champions, the pressure would be on the Eels this afternoon.

“It’s a new season, so it will be interesting to see what these two teams bring to the field.”
