Cook Islands emerges from a close battle with Fiji to take the Tri Nations Rugby Union series opener.

Cook Islands Residents defeated the Fiji Residents team 15-10 to win the Tri Nations Rugby Union Series opener at Raemaru Park in Arorangi yesterday.

Cook Islands and the Fijian sides were locked at 7-all at the break. Cook Islands took the lead from a penalty before Fiji leveled the match 10-all from a three-pointer.

The home side scored a try in the dying stages to win the match 15-10. Fiji will pay Samoa next Friday.
