Poila wins fishing comp, scrapes by with 100 grams

Poe Poila and crew with the winning heaviest fish in the BSP fishing competition, a 26.5 kilogram yellowfin tuna. 22041904.

With just a 100 grams (0.1kg or 100 ml of water) difference in weight, Poe Poila won the BSP Easter Fishing competition with his a 26.5kg yellowfin tuna, scraping past runner up Marah Tairi and his 26.4kg yellowfin tuna.

Fish catches were not the best for the event which was held on Saturday, and from the 32 registered boats, many boats did not make a mark on the board having failed to weigh in a fish.

A total of 31 fish was caught including the species of: yellowfin tuna, wahoo, black marlin, blue marlin, skipjack, mahi mahi and rainbow runners.

Prizegiving was held at 7pm and a live band entertained the members and guests.

The results are as follows. Heaviest Fish Section: 1st Manakia $1000, Poe Poila with a 26.5kg yellowfin tuna; 2nd Mariu $300, Marah Tairi - 26.4kg yellowfin tuna; 3rd My Girl $200 Irakau William - 23.5kg yellowfin tuna.

Aggregate Section: 1st Vaihina $300, Gordon Heather - 45.2kg; 2nd Yewolea $200, Tutai William - 25.9kg; 3rd Raumati $100 cash,  Papa Ina Kaukura - 17.3kg.

Marlin section: 1st Manakia $150, Poe Poila - Black Marlin 121.5kg; 2nd Extreme $100 cash, Troy Henderson - Blue Marlin 69.7kg.
