The 2025 Rising Stars Championship kicked off yesterday at Raemaru Park in Arorangi, bringing together 12 schools with over 1000 athletes for a fun-filled day of rugby and netball.

Supported by the Te Marae Ora (TMO) Ministry of Health, the opening day highlighted more than just sports, it promoted healthy living.

TMO’s public health manager, Tereapii Tumutoa emphasised the event's significant role in encouraging active lifestyles and positive health choices among young people.

“We’re grateful that TMO supports this event financially because we see the benefits of physical activity and the hydration message we are conveying to our youth today,” Tumutoa said.

TMO has supported the Rising Stars Championship for the past five years, reinforcing important messages around hydration, smoke-free environments, and healthy nutrition.

“Our key message for today is simple: it’s quite hot, so we want to emphasize the importance of keeping our children hydrated,” he said.

Tumutoa also praised the organisers for maintaining a smoke-free environment and for banning sugary drinks this year.

He said schools promoting water and nu (coconut) was very encouraging and is a positive change.

Now in its 10th year, the Rising Stars Championship continues to expand.

In previous years, the event has helped young athletes develop their skills and opened doors for opportunities abroad.

Tumutoa added that the program not only encourages physical activity but also provides a safe and enjoyable space for children to “be kids.” The competition will continue over the next four weeks.
