Young and talented Cook Islanders show interest in representing the country at the upcoming Under-21 World Cup.

Netball Cook Islands have received a couple of completed applications in the short time it has opened its under-21 trials for the World Youth Cup, says assistant coach Sebon Will.

The World Youth Cup which has been postponed twice due to Covid-19 will now be held from December 1-19, 2021, in Fiji.

Will says they have also received a number of verbal interests with athletes preparing footage before completing the formal application form.

The team management is expecting more applications in the coming weeks.

Will says the programme is open to both local and overseas athletes, as they need to prepare for the ever-changing travel restrictions due to the Covid pandemic.

“Planning for this tournament in these expectational times has required our coaching and management team to think outside the square,” Will said.

“We will be preparing a full squad based in Rarotonga, in case New Zealand or Australian border restrictions prevent travel and we also need to do something similar in New Zealand/Australia in case the Cook Islands border remains closed.”

Representing the Cook Islands is an amazing experience, says Will and playing for the U21s at this pinnacle international event is the first step to their international careers.

“If you are committed, self-motivated and wanting to represent your family and country on the international stage now or in the future, then we’re here to support you on that journey and would love to see an application from you.

“We have experienced great performances in Cook Islands netball in recent years, through our national squad and previous U21 squad from Botswana, so it’s important that we continue to grow and develop more talent to maintain or improve our international ranking well into the future.”
