Netball Cook Islands president Ngere Puia-Fraser says there were 27 netball trialists from Rarotonga, Australia and New Zealand who were part of the April 19 and 21 sessions at the National Sports Arena Indoor Stadium.
She explained that the sessions included Fitness Testing x 5 on session 1, Session 2 - Ball Skills & Game Play and Session 3 - Fitness Testing x 1 and Game Play.
“The trials focused on assessing fitness levels and ball skills. The players were tested for agility, speed and jump tests and finished off with the yoyo test to show endurance.
“Game Play is all about court awareness, to assess a player's ability to anticipate and react to the game.”
Puia-Fraser said, “The final selection will be based on the players overall performance across all aspects of the trials, including fitness and skills.
“The selection will also take into account the specific needs and strengths of the team.”
“We will be selecting a Training Squad of 20 Players - they will be notified by email.”
The trials were held to select a team for the Netball World Youth Cup to be held in Gibraltar from September 19 to 28, 2025.
Coached by Lux Letoa, the Under 21 team will be facing New Zealand, the host nation Gibraltar, Malaysia, and Zambia.
The trials were open to all Cook Islanders, locally and overseas-based players.
The Cook Islands U21 team that secured the Netball World Youth Cup qualification in a tournament held in Rarotonga in September last year comprised both local and overseas-based players.
