In a thrilling start to the premier men’s Cook Islands Rugby League (CIRL) State of Origin series, the Town Blues emerged winners over the Country Maroons 46-28, after a fiercely contested match that remained tied for most of the 80 minutes.

The Town Blues, an elite side combining players from the Avatiu Eels, Tupapa Panthers and Takuvaine Warriors, proved their experience in the dying minutes on Saturday at Aretere Park in Avatiu, pulling away from a 28-all deadlock with a flurry of late tries.

The Country Maroons, representing the Arorangi Bears, Ngatangiia Matavera Sea Eagles and Titikaveka Bulldogs, matched their rivals in intensity and physicality for the majority of the game, but couldn’t contain the Blues’ late surge.

With just 10 minutes remaining, the game’s standout player, Mafu Kalas, nicknamed “The Little General”, stepped up in spectacular fashion.

The Tupapa Panthers star orchestrated the final assault, leading his side to score 18 unanswered points and secure the win.

Kalas’ performance earned him the Player of the Match honours for his game control, key involvements and leadership on the field.

A dramatic moment unfolded in the 59th minute when Kalas, sprinting toward the try line chased by three Maroons, was tackled from behind by a determined Maroons defender.

Despite being in position for a diving try, the ball slipped from his grip and flew as he hit the ground. However, his resilience paid off minutes later when he set up and converted the final tries.

Avatiu Eels flyer Tama Nicholas added to the Blues’ late-game dominance with a sensational solo effort in the 76th minute, racing down the wing for a well-executed try.

Though the scoreboard showed a comfortable win for the Blues, the contest was anything but one-sided.

The Maroons matched the Blues with hard tackles and spirited play until the final quarter.

Key performers for the Maroons side included Tangi Akava, Amani Ama, Tua Herman, James Strickland and Taio Taio, while Peter Lagilagi, Kana Nga, Perry Ioane and Toru Katuke made notable contributions for the Blues.

In the post-match interview, Blues vice-captain Tama Nicholas, speaking to Chris Browne of Cook Islands Rugby League, praised his team’s effort and the spirit of the competition.

“We didn’t want to be too casual leading into this game. This is the next level above club rounds, and even our training reflected that. We came together as rivals turned teammates, and the brotherhood showed. Big thanks to our sponsors and supporters,” said Nicholas.

Maroons captain Timothy Tangirere acknowledged the challenge of preparation but was proud of his team’s effort.

“We had a rough start to the week but came together well by Tuesday. The boys played with heart in the first half, but the last 15 minutes showed the Town side’s experience. Still, the bond is there and we’ll build on this going into next (this) week,” Tangirere said.

The Under 16 sides also took to the field for their first match with the Blues taking out the win.

The second leg of the series will be held at Nukupure Park in Ngatangiia this Saturday followed by the final leg at Aretere Park.

The Country Maroons premier team is coached by Dion Nepia, the mentor of the Arorangi Bears club, while Avatiu Nikao Eels coach Clive Nicholas is mentoring the Town Blues.
