The event promises an afternoon of fun, movement and community, inspiring the next generation of athletes.
World Kids Athletics Day, initiated by World Athletics, is a global movement to promote physical activity and the joy of athletics among children.
Designed to be inclusive and engaging, the programme introduces young people to running, jumping and throwing through fun, age-appropriate activities.
The activities range from sprints to long jumps. Adding a magical twist, beloved characters Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and Elsa will guide the tamariki through the day.
World Kids Athletics Day has become a cherished event in the Cook Islands, reflecting the nation’s deep love for sport and community. Since its introduction, Athletics Cook Islands has embraced the programme, hosting vibrant events at the National Stadium (also known as Tereora Stadium) and across the Pa Enua (outer islands).
In 2023, over 500 children from Rarotonga, Atiu, Aitutaki, Mangaia, Mitiaro and Mauke participated, earning the Cook Islands the prestigious World Athletics Kids Athletics Day global winner prize. The prize funded new equipment, boosting grassroots programmes and inter-island youth competitions.
The Cook Islands’ approach is uniquely creative. In the Pa Enua, where resources are limited, tamariki have used coconuts for shot put and jandals for throwing events, proving that passion and ingenuity can overcome any challenge. On Rarotonga, the event has grown into a community affair, with parents and volunteers rallying to support the kids, fostering unity and pride.
As Simone Fe’ao, president of Athletics Cook Islands, noted in 2023, “It’s about giving it a go and activating our community to move together.”
In the Cook Islands, sport is a way of life, woven into the fabric of our culture. From the historic 1924 rugby match against the All Black Invincibles to the modern Cook Islands Games, our people have always celebrated athleticism with heart and pride. World Kids Athletics Day continues this legacy by planting seeds for the future.
Young stars like Adison Rowe, Metuamaru Arere, Tatjiana Areai, Emma Papalii, Antonia Wearing, Thomas Makimare and Retire Daniel, just to name a few, and many other talented athletes before them are a true testament to this and show the potential within our tamariki.
This event is a chance for every child to feel like a champion, whether they’re racing across the track or cheering from the sidelines. It’s about more than medals – it’s about building resilience, teamwork and a lifelong love for movement. As the Cook Islands prepares to host the Pacific Mini Games in 2029, days like this are shaping the athletes who will carry our flag high.
The event starts at 3pm. The entry is free.
