LETTERS: Where is the progress?

Letters for Thursday October 28, 2021

I have been resident on Aitutaki for some years and have been back on Rarotonga in recent days for the first time in several months.

In the case of Rarotonga there has been no development on the Back Rd except for between town and Avatiu.

They must do something about it soon.

The progress has been very slow.

I did raise concerns years ago about the state of Back Rd. Meanwhile, the landowners at Maungatea bluff are sitting on a goldmine.

They could have a cable car there, they are sitting on something for tourism. I know it would cost a bit but it would be worth it.

Regarding the outer islands, only Rarotonga and Aitutaki have sealed runways.

The other islands have been waiting for years to have their runways sealed. I thought they would have progressively started sealing the southern group of islands.

‘Government needs to act now’

I agree with Tata Crocombe in his published opinion piece and in particular

his outing of the ridiculous government policies that are glaring in their inequalities.

Whilst I’m sure these were well intended they do nothing less now than create resentment from a hard working private sector.

This nonsense is upside down.

When you consider the full pay for the public service and a severe $8 per hour for the rest of the population that they serve it is a disgrace that it is allowed to continue.

It’s time for a coherent plan from the government.

Throwing taxpayers money at everything has run its course and can’t be allowed further. Set the date that allows everyone to make their way with the virus.

Less of the rhetoric and more of some honesty. Let’s recognise the reality for all of the community and the precarious nature of our economic and social situations.

I have been trying to relocate to the Cook Islands to live and work since lockdown happened but this border closure and my non PR status, despite being an NZ born Cook Islander are getting in the way. Very frustrating sitting in limbo to be honest! I am currently booked for the 6th Nov 2021 but a week out, I am still not confident this flight is going to go ahead so will potentially have to rebook for the third time! - Marianne Daniels

Good calls Tata - but the PM already said last year Cabinet and HOMs will not be taking a pay cut. Government has not initiated a freeze on employment or the purchase of 4X drive vehicles that are completely excess to requirements. There is no will or commitment to curbing the culture of excess practiced by this government. - Florence Syme-Buchanan
